Eugene Walckiers
Trio in d minor for Flute, Cello & Piano, Op.97
Eugène Walckiers (1793-1866) was born in the Belgian town of Avesnes-sur-Helpe. He studied flute with Jean-Louis Tulou and composition with Anton Reicha in Paris. Virtually all of his compositions included the flute. He wrote a great deal of chamber music, including trios with flute and cello, flute quartets, piano quintets with flute and so forth. These compositions were admired by Rossini, Meyerbeer and other prominent contemporaries of Walckiers and were much in demand during his lifetime.
The Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano in d minor, Op.97 dates from 1859 and is a late work in the composer’s oeuvre. It is full of romance, drama and passion and treats all of the instruments in an equal fashion. In four movements, Moderato, Scherzo, Adagio and Finale, the work was also billed by the publisher and a regular piano trio for violin, cello and piano. But it seems clear that the composer’s intent was for it to be a trio for flute, cello and piano.
