La Viennoise Polka, Op.144 for String Quartet
The La Viennoise Polka was composed in 1854 while Strauss was in his early 20's. The title, La Viennoise, indicates that the music was meant to convey the idea of 'The Viennese Lady, that is the elegant upper class Viennese woman, and, in fact, Strauss instructs the performers to play the music con eleganza, with elegance. It was originally intended for his small orchestra of around 20 players but arrangements of it for much smaller and more intimate groups were almost immediately made from the time it was published so that it could be heard in the cafes and coffee houses throughout Vienna.
