Andreas Späth
Variations for Clarinet and String Quartet, Op.69
Andreas Späth (1790-1876) was born in the village of Rossach not from from the German city of Coburg. He studied oboe and clarinet, the latter upon which he became quite proficient in Coburg. Subsequently, he was able to study violin and composition in Vienna. He held the position of solo clarinetist in the ducal orchestra of Franconia and then obtained a music directorship in Switzerland before he returned to Coburg where he also served as music director. He composed over 200 works ranging from opera to chamber music.
The Variations for Clarinet and String Quartet with bass ad libitum dates from 1822 and was dedicated to Johann Simon Hermstedt, widely considered one of the finest clarinetists of his time. The work begins with a solemn introduction and is followed by four variations each of which has submovements within the variation. We have reprinted the original and only edition, as far as we know, of this work. We worked from a clean copy but it was 200 years old and though entirely readable is in a very few spots a little light.
