Adios Muchachos!

Adiós Muchachos is a 1927 tango composed by the Argentinian pianist Julio César Sanders and the Argentinian poet César Vedani. Sanders was inspired when after a night out with a group of friends in the Buenos Aires district of Flores, one of them said goodbye with the words "Adiós, muchachos". (So long Fellows, Good bye boys) Sanders and Vedani then made off to a nearby café where Vedani sat down at a table drinking wine and writing verses to go with the title while Sanders sat a piano working on the melody. The original lyrics have the protagonist, who is close to death from an illness, say goodbye to his friends, while reminiscing on aspects of his life.
Julio César Sanders (1897–1942) was an Argentine musician who made his career as a pianist and composer of tango. He was the author of several famous tangos of which Adios muchachos is probably the most famous. He was born in the town of Quilmes not far from Buenos Aires. His grandparents on his father’s side were English, on his mother’s Anglo-Creole.
There have literally been dozens of arrangements of Sanders’ melody, including for orchestra. However, as an instrumental work, it has an intimacy and sounds best as a chamber work.
