Trio Sonata in A Major, Op.5 No.1 for 2 Violins & Cello
Giovanni Battista Sammartini (1700-1775) was born in Milan. His first music lessons were from his father a French oboe player then working in the Italian city. He was given violin, organ, voice and composition lessons. He eventually obtained the prestigious postion of choirmaster at one of Milan's most important churches, a position he held his entire life through which he became famous as a composer of church music. He was also an important and sought after teacher, counting Gluck and Myslivecek among his many students. Like most from this era, he composed a prodigious amount of music. Many scholars regard him as the precursor of Haydn. His early music is firmly rooted in the Baroque but later he worked in a pre-classical style, the so-called style galant.
His Trio in A Major, Op.5 No.1 is the first of a set of six. Composed in the Baroque style, they were probably completed between 1735 and 1740. In two movements--the first is a charming Affetuoso and the second is a Minuet.
Strong enough for concert performance, this trio, however, can also be warmly recommended to amateurs as it presents no technical obstacles.
