Piano Quintet in a minor, Op.32

Joseph Ryelandt (1870-1965) was born in the Flemish town of Bruge (Brugge in Dutch) in Belgium. He was largely self taught although he did study privately with Eduard Tinel, at the time one of Belgium's leading composers. Because he was of independent means, he was able to devote himself entirely to composing. He composed in most genres. In later life, he taught and served as director of the Bruge Conservatory.

His Piano Quintet in a minor, Op.32 dates from 1901. It is in three movements. The opening Allegro moderato begins with a powerful main theme and is followed by a more lyrical and delicate subject. The middle movement is a beautiful, elegaic Adagio religioso. The finale, Allegro, is restless and tinged with sadness. The influence of Cesar Franck and his use of cyclical themes can be felt in that the themes of the prior two movements make a reprise.

This is quite a good work, with excellent part-writing that can be recommended both for concert performance as well as to amateur players..
