Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
In the Monastery for String Quartet
Rimsky Korsakov’s In the Monastery is the last movement from his String Quartet No.2 which he completed in 1879. Korsakov did not feel that the quartet merited publication and it was not published until nearly 50 years after his death. However, he decided to revise the quartet and after completely reworking it, he orchestrated it and eventually published the first three movements as his Sinfonietta, Op.31. The final movement, which has come down to us as In the Monastery, he also orchestrated and used in his opera Sadko. However, he also allowed it to be published separately in a version for string quartet. It is a fugue on the song Our Father used in the Russian Orthodox church service, which is why the movement came to be known as In the Monastery.
Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) needs no introduction. He is justifiably famous for Scheherazade and many other orchestral works. Unfortunately, his chamber music is virtually unknown.
