William Henry Pommer
Piano Quintet in d minor, Op.21
William Henry Pommer, (1851-1937) was born in St. Louis, Missouri. After studying locally, he traveled to the Leipzig Conservatory where he studied with Carl Reinecke and then went on to Vienna where he took further lessons from Anton Bruckner. Returning to Missouri in 1875. he embarked on a career as a conductor, teacher and composer. His songs and chamber music were repected and his reputation extended well beyond the United States as this piano quintet, which was brought out by Daniel Rahter, one of Germany's leading music publisher indicates. Pommer was for many years the supervisor of musical education in St. Louis and also was the founder of the University of Missouri Conservatory.
His Piano Quintet in d minor dates from 1913 and was dedicated to Frank Gecks who founded one of the leading music schools in St. Louis. In four movements, the work opens with a restless and somewhat turbulent Allegro con moto. The gorgeous second movement Andante non troppo begins with a rather lengthy cello solo with piano accompaniment. When the others join in at first sounds like a intermezzo and then a dreamy fantasia. The third movement, Allegro assai e con brio, is a hard charging lively scherzo. The exciting finale, Allegro vivace, makes for a suitable conclusion.
Out of print for the better part of a century, we are pleased to reintroduce this important American piano quintet from the Romantic era. It should be of interest to both professionals and amateurs.
