Piano Trio No.2 in F Major, Op.52

Bernhard Molique (1802-1869) was born in the German city of Nuremberg. After studying with his father, Molique took lessons from Louis Spohr and Pietro Rovelli. After pursing a career as a touring virtuoso for several years, Molique accepted the position of Music Director to the Royal Court in Stuttgart. He also taught for several years in London at the Royal Academy of Music. As a composer, he was largely self taught. His music shows the influence of Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Spohr. Remembered now only for his violin concertos, he wrote a considerable amount of chamber music including eight string quartets and two piano trios.

The Piano Trio No.2 was composed in 1855 while Molique was still living in London. It was dedicated to the then famous Anglo-German conductor and pianist Charles Halle. The lyrical opening movement, Allegro vivace, is dominated by its charming melodies which have echoes of Mendelssohn and at times show the influence of Beethoven. The second movement, Andante con moto, begins softly. It has, at times, the quality of a Mendelssohnian song without words. Next comes a playful energetic Scherzo. The finale, Molto allegro e vivace, begins in a genial and relaxed fashion and retains a sense of elegance and dignity throughout.

This is another first rate piano trio which has undeservedly 'flown beneath the radar'. It deserves concert performance and can also be recommended to amateur groups.
