Andante and Allegro for Piano Trio, Op.67

Vincenzo de Meglio (1825-1883 was born in the Italian city of Naples. He lived most of his life there, studying at the Naples Conservatory and eventually teaching at it as well. He performed regularly as a concert pianist but also in the salons of Naples and the surrounding towns of Calabria. He composed both classical works, opera and also operetta.

The Andante and Allegro was completed around 1860. It is structurally in free format, and as such not arranged as a tradition piano trio. The composition presents the characteristics of a typical salon piece in that it has a well-balanced contrast between the episodes of the initial slow Andante and the more lively Allegro. The Andante has the atmosphere of a romance, the kind of romance which was then popular in the Italian salons of the time.  The lively and brilliant Allegro which follows is written in 6/8 rhythm and takes the form of a traditional tarantella. This is especially so in the stretta  coda with which the piece ends. The piano writing is clear and flowing writing and the relationship between the three instruments is very well balanced.

Almost as long as a shorter piano trio, this work makes an excellent choice on a concert program. Additionally either of these movements would make for an excellent encore.
