String Octet in d minor, Op.50

"I warmly recommend Otto Malling's String Octet in d minor, which appeared in 1893, especially to amateur ensembles as it presents no real technical difficulties and is full of splendid melodies. It is very well-written, and sounds extraordinarily good. That it is concise with no padding  and its Nordic flavor is yet another reason it can be recommended. The opening movement, Allegro appassionato, begins in a series sound-swells before the lively main theme makes its appearance. It is followed by a lyrical subject with a charming accompaniment. The workmanship shows the deft hand of a master. The main theme to the Scherzo, Allegro vivace, which follows is original, a kind of rustic, Nordic folk dance. It is followed in turn by an energetic and powerful second subject. Next comes an Intermezzo, which is a sweet romance, with a middle section which can be likened to a Legend. Otto Malling (1848-1915) was born in Copenhagen. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music with Niels Gade and Johan (J.P.E.) Hartmann. He worked as a teacher and composer and eventually became a professor and then director at the Royal Danish Academy. Among his many students was the composer Knudage Riisager. Most of his compositions were for voice and or organ—he also served as chief organist of the Copenhagen Cathedral for many years. Nonetheless, he also composed orchestral and instrumental music. After the First World War as musical tastes changed and the Romantic movement was disparaged, he and his music were promptly forgotten. However, today, he is being rediscovered to the delight of listeners and players.

This is first rate octet which belongs on the stands of both professionals and amateurs alike whenever there is an octet eveing scheduled. Unavailable for nearly a century, we are pleased to bring it back and hope you will give it a chance.
