Charles Martin Loeffler, (1861-1935) was born in Berlin (his original name was Martin Karl Loeffler.) He studied violin with Joseph Joachim and composition with Friedrich Kiel and Woldemar Bargiel. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1882 and served for many years as assistant concertmaster of the Boston Symphony. By the time of his death, he was considered one of America’s most important composers.
“The Quintet in One Movement for Three Violins, Viola & Cello was composed in 1894. Although there is only one movement, Allegro commodo, there are in fact several mini-movements within it, and the work is nearly as long as a standard three or four movement work. A wealth of excellent thematic material graces this very attractive sounding music. Exotic tonalities are mixed with Slavic folk tunes. Extensive double stopping in the lower voices, at times, makes it sound almost like a sextet. This is a superb piece and it though it is unlikely to often be played with 3 violins, the Violin III part is low enough to easily be handled by a competent violist. In fact, both in letters to friends and the manuscript, there are indications that Loeffler, who himself was a fine violist, anticipated this possibility.
