String Quintet in A Major, Op.35

For 2 Violins, 2 Violas and Cello

Johann Christian Lobe (1797-1881) was born in the German city of Weimar. His initial studies were with his father with whom he studied violin and flute. Some sources suggest that he also studied composition with Johann Nepomuk Hummel who was then active in Weimar. .In 1808, he obtained a position as a flutist and later violinist in Weimar Orchestra, where he worked until 1842. He then founded his own music school where he taught for four years.  In 1846, he moved to Leipzig when he was offered the editorship of the prestigious musical journal, the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung. He also taught composition at the Leipzig Conservatory. Although he wrote works in nearly every genre from opera, to symphonies and chamber, but during his lifetime and thereafter, his reputation rested on his writings, the most important of which was his textbook Lehrbuch der musikalischen Composition (Guide to Musical Composition in four volumes), an extensive treatise on the science of harmony, polyphony, variation techniques and individual musical forms. It went through several editions and is still in use today.

His String Quintet in A Major was composed sometime during the 1830s and was published by the prominent firm of Schott in Mainz in 1840. The opening movement Allegro risoluto, begins with the first violin signing a stately theme before the a duet between it and the cello who is in pizzicato ensues. A tempo changes follows and then returns to the original in a playful mode. Next comes Menuetto allegro moderato with a misterios trio section. In third place is an Allegretto moderato which is a cross between a doleful march and an intermezzo. A lively and energeticAllegro vivace concludes this appealing work.,

Long out of print, we are pleased to present this charming quintet which should be of especial interest to amateur ensembles looking to present a work in concert.
