String Trio in g minor, Op.52 No.2
Peter Lindpaintner (1791-1856) was born in the German city of Koblenz. He studied composition with Peter von Winter and enjoyed a career as a composer and music director. His music shows the influence of Carl Maria von Weber. He was considered one of the most important opera composers in Germany during the first half of the 19th century and Mendelssohn considered him the finest orchestral director then active around 1830. Other than his operas, which occasionally receive a performance in German lands, little else seems to have survived. Exactly how much chamber music he composed, we have been unable to determine. Other than the three Grand Trios for Violin, Viola and Cello, Op.52 and at least one string quartet, no information exists. It is quite likely that he, like his contemporaries, wrote a fair among which can probably be found in various libraries in Germany and which remains to be rediscovered.
The String Trio in D Major is the first of the set of three which appeared in 1830. If sales are any indication, they enjoyed a fair amount of popularity among the home music making market. The opening movement, Allegro maestoso, opens in ceremonious manner with a series of downward plunging triplet passages which dominate the rest of this turbulent movement. A bumptious, somewhat thrusting Menuetto with a dance-like Ländler trio section follows. The third movement, Andante con moto, is mostly calm and reflective although it is occasionally and suddenly interrupted by violent, short stormy interludes. The trio is concluded by an exciting, galloping Rondo.
We have reprinted the original and only edition of this trio and can recommend it to amateur players looking for an late classical, early romantic era work.
