Ferdinand Laub
Concert Polonaise, Op.8 for Violin & Piano
Tchaikovsky called Ferdinand Laub (1832-1875) the finest violinist of his time. Laub was born in Prague and studied at the Prague Conservatory with several teachers there including Friedrich Wilhelm Pixis. He concertized all over Europe and was widely acclaimed. He held posts as a professor of violin in Vienna, Berlin and finally at the Moscow Conservatory.
The Concert Polonaise, as the title suggests, was a piece designed for the recital hall. It is a real polonaise, lively and full of exciting effects, but also with contrasting sections of warm and lyrical melody.
Although it has been published several times before, surprisingly it has never, because of the difficult page turns, appeared in a performance edition. To perform it, one had either to memorize it or tear the music completely apart. Our edition has solved this problem and is the first performance edition with proper page turns to ever be published.
