Violin Sonata in e minor, Op.28

Halina Krzyzanowska (1867-1937) was born in Paris to Polish parents. Her father went into exile, having taken part in an uprising against the Russian occupiers. She was trained as a pianist at the Paris Conservatory where she won prizes both for  her playing and compositions. For many years, she enjoyed a reputation as one of the leading concert pianists before the French public and her compositions were published by some of the leading publishing houses of Paris. She eventually became a professor of music at the Conservatory in Rennes where she lived the rest of her life.

Her Violin Sonata dates from 1912. It is not known whether it was ever performed during her lifetime though it certainly should have been as it is an appealing work. In three movements, the opening movement, Allegro con fuoco, is dramatic and marked by pathos and a yearning quality. The song-like middle movement, Andante, could well be an art song with its lovely lyricism. The hard-driving finale, Allegro non troppo, with its pulsing sycopation is without doubt the high point of this fine work.

This is an appealing and attractive work which is certain to be a success if given in recital. It does present any real technical challenges and hence can be warmly recommended to amateur players.
