Frederik Klint
String Quartet in A Major, Op.25 No.2
Frederik Vilhelm Klint (1811-1894) was born in the Swedish town of Visby. He studied composition and organ at Uppsala University and subsequently at the Royal Swedish Music Conservatory in Stockholm. For much of the 19th century, it was impossible for Swedish musicians to make a living as composers and many were forced to take jobs which had nothing to do with music altogether, such as watch making and glass blowing, in ordto make a living. Klint was a bit more fortunate in that he was able to obtain the position as chief organist for a number of churches in Gotland. This was one of the most lucrative jobs a Swedish musician could hope for at that time. Klint wrote six string quartet of which all but this one remain in manuscript.
We believe that his String Quartet in A Major, Op.25 No.2 was composed around 1850 but Klint was, unfortunately, unable to find a publisher for it until 1882. In four movements, it opens with a tuneful Allegro con spirito which is perhaps more lyrical than spirited. The second movement, Menuetto, tranquillo e molto moderato, is a bright, lively country minuet with a contrasting rustic trio. Next comes an Andante which is a theme and a set of interesting variations. The theme is based on a Swedish folk tune. The variations are well handled. The finale, an Allegro, begins with a hunting motif given out first by viola and then the others in unison follow.
This is a work which is comfortable to play and a good choice for amateur groups looking for an effective performance work. Unavailable for many years we are pleased to present it once again..
