Fantasie for Clarinet and Piano
Augusta Holmes (1847-1903) was born in Paris. Her family was of Irish descent. Despite her talent and despite gaining entrance, Holmes' parents refused to let her study at the Paris Conservatory. She was, however, allowed to study privately which she did with Cesar Franck among others. She composed in most genres and became known as a composer of program music. Two of her symphonic poems were subtitled Irlande and Pologne.
Holmes' Fantasie for Clarinet and Piano was composed in 1900. The writing, as shown not only by the thematic material but also by the technical demands, for the clarinet shows that she understood the nature of the instrument quite well. Our soundbite presents the last half of the work. This is an atmospheric piece which will make a fine choice for either recital or the concert hall.
