Pastorale for Flute, Violin and Piano, Op.51

Carl Hillmann (1867-1955) was born in the German city of Frankfurt am Main. He studied violin at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt with Hugo Heermann and composition with Iwan Knorr. After graduating, he remained in Frankfurt for a number of years teaching before emigrating to the United States in 1892 where he obtained the post of Principal Second Violinist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He also played in the first violin section as well as the viola section of the orchestra where he remained as a member until 1919. He also taught at the Columbia College of Music in Chicago and was a member of the Chicago Piano Quartet on of the leading chamber music ensembles before the public

Hillmann began composing while still in Frankfurt and continued throughout most of his life. The bulk of his compositions were either for violin and piano, piano alone or chamber music of which there were several works for flute, violin and piano. His Pastorale for Flute, Violin and Piano dates from 1910.

This is a charming work which would do well in concert where a shorter work is required or as an encore. Warmly recommended to both professional and amateur players.
