Three Trios for 2 Violins & Cello or (Viola), Op.13

"Pierre Crémont's three Op.13 trios are in no way difficult to play and were intended for amateurs as a either a performance vehicle or for home music making. In the first two, the violins can play entirely in first position, should they so desire. The First Trio is in two movements which are well written. Tonally, the first movement, Allegro moderato, is especially appealing. The work concludes with a charming theme and set of variations. The Second Trio has three movements. The opening Allegro is brilliantly scored. The Third Trio has three movements. Here, between the opening Allegro moderato and closing Allegro vivace, one finds an appealing Andantino grazioso."---Wilhelm Altmann writing in his Chamber Music Handbook.

Pierre Crémont (1784-1846) was born in the French town of Aurillac. He was primarily trained as a violinist and made his career as one, but was also a fine clarinetist. He served as concertmaster at the Orchestra in Frankfurt, then toured as a soloist in Poland and Russia. Later, he was appointed leader of the Moscow opera and then concertmaster of the Paris Comic Opera. He ended his career as head of the Philharmonic Society in the French city of Tours.

Often, we are asked by players for well-written works that can be performed in public but which are not technically beyond the average amateur player. Here are three such works. These are works from the early years of the 19th century in the early romantic style. Although intended for players of modest technical attainments, they are still good enough to be played in concert. Even professional groups have done so. Cremont, himself, called them Concert and Light Trios.
